When Is Satyanarayan Vrat Performed?

Satyanarayan Vrat is tied to the Purnima, the full moon day, rather than to a fixed calendar date. That means it comes round every month, and a year holds twelve or thirteen of them depending on where the lunar months fall. The tables below give every 2026 and 2027 date, with the Purnima tithi window for each 2026 date, so find your month in the first column.

The vrat and the Satyanarayan Puja are the same occasion, so a search for either set of dates lands on the same Purnima calendar. Because it recurs monthly, families rarely need to wait for a specific festival. Many choose the Purnima nearest a housewarming, a wedding anniversary, the start of a business, or the fulfilment of a vow. Others keep it every month as a regular practice. The Satyanarayan Katha itself stays the same on each occasion.

Satyanarayan Vrat 2026 Dates

The Purnima tithi rarely fits neatly inside one calendar day. It usually begins on one date and ends on the next, which is why the window matters as much as the date.

One of these carries a festival of its own. The Purnima of 25 October is Sharad Purnima, kept as Kojagara Puja, so a household planning the Satyanarayan vrat that month is planning it on the same night.

Thirteen dates rather than twelve, because 2026 carries an adhik maas, the intercalary month, which puts a second Purnima in May. Timings follow Drik Panchang for New Delhi. Sunrise and local time shift the practical window slightly from city to city, so check a Panchang set to your own location before fixing a muhurat.

Satyanarayan Vrat 2027 Dates

Twelve dates in 2027, with no month carrying two. Dates follow Drik Panchang for New Delhi. Tithi windows for 2027 are added closer to the year, since they shift with the location you calculate them for.

Why the Vrat Sometimes Falls a Day Before the Festival

This causes real confusion, and 2026 gives a clean example of it.

A Purnima tithi commonly spans two calendar dates. The Satyanarayan Vrat follows that tithi as it runs through the day and into the evening, since the puja has no requirement for a morning slot. Some festivals sharing the same Purnima do have such a requirement, and when the tithi ends early on the second date, the two separate.

In Shravan 2026 the Purnima runs from 09:08 AM on 27 August to 09:48 AM on 28 August. The Satyanarayan Vrat falls on 27 August, when the tithi covers the evening. Raksha Bandhan falls on 28 August for a different reason. Bhadra, the period in which a rakhi is not tied, occupies the whole of the 27th’s Purnima, running to 09:32 PM. That rules out both the afternoon and evening windows on the 27th, leaving only the stretch between sunrise and the 09:48 AM tithi end on the 28th. One tithi, two observances, two dates.

So a calendar showing Raksha Bandhan on the 28th and the Satyanarayan Vrat on the 27th is not in error. Check the tithi window rather than the festival name when the two seem to disagree.

Choosing the Right Purnima for Your Puja

If the puja marks an occasion rather than a monthly practice, a few considerations help narrow the choice.

• Kartika Purnima, 24 November 2026, is among the most auspicious of the year and draws the largest gatherings.
• Vaishakha Purnima, 1 May 2026, and the Shravana Purnima vrat, 27 August 2026, are also traditionally favoured. Note that a general Purnima calendar lists Shravana Purnima itself on 28 August, since the tithi spans both dates.
• For a housewarming or a business opening, the nearest Purnima to your griha pravesh muhurat is usually chosen rather than a distant auspicious one.
• Two dates in 2026 have no evening window. On 3 January the tithi ends at 03:32 PM, before the 05:37 PM sunset, and on 3 March it ends at 05:07 PM, before the 06:22 PM sunset. Plan the puja earlier in the day on both. On 29 July the evening window is short, with the tithi ending at 08:05 PM, under an hour after sunset.

Satyanarayan Puja Timings

The puja is valid at any point while the Purnima tithi runs, which is what makes it easier to arrange than festivals bound to a narrow muhurat.

Evening is the most common choice, partly because the katha is long enough that families prefer to gather after the working day, and partly because the tithi more often covers the evening than the early morning. The dates in the tables are already the correct ones. What varies is the usable slot within them, so where a tithi ends in the afternoon the puja is simply held earlier in the day rather than moved.
