The three types of Griha Pravesh
The scriptures describe three forms of housewarming. Apoorva is the first entry into a brand-new home on freshly acquired land. Sapoorva is re-entering a home after a period away — for travel, work or migration. Dwandwah is entering a home that was rebuilt or repaired after damage. Knowing which applies helps the pandit ji choose the correct vidhi.
Choosing an auspicious muhurat
A good muhurat considers the Hindu month, tithi, nakshatra, and the direction your home faces. Months such as Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha and Jyeshtha are generally favourable, while certain periods are avoided. Because timing is personal to your family’s panchang, it is best confirmed with an experienced acharya rather than a generic calendar.
The puja vidhi, step by step
- Purification — The home is cleaned and sprinkled with gangajal; the family bathes and wears fresh clothes.
- Ganesh & Kalash sthapana — Lord Ganesh is invoked first, followed by establishing the sacred kalash at the entrance.
- Vastu Shanti — The Vastu Purush is worshipped to balance the energies of the home and remove doshas.
- Havan — A sacred fire is offered with mantras for prosperity, ending in purnahuti.
- Boiling milk & first meal — Milk is boiled until it overflows — a symbol of abundance — and the first meal is cooked.
