What is a muhurat?

A muhurat is an auspicious window of time chosen to begin an important activity — a puja, wedding, housewarming or new venture. Selecting it well aligns your action with favourable cosmic rhythms, giving the best possible start.

The five limbs of the panchang

  • Tithi — the lunar day
  • Vaar — the weekday and its ruling planet
  • Nakshatra — the lunar constellation
  • Yoga — the sun–moon combination
  • Karana — half of a tithi

Why personalised beats generic

A printed calendar lists general auspicious days, but it cannot account for your nakshatra, your home’s direction or the nature of your specific ceremony. An experienced acharya weighs all of these together — which is why the same date can be ideal for one family and unsuitable for another.

Periods to approach with care

Certain windows — such as Rahu Kaal each day, and periods like Chaturmas for some ceremonies — are traditionally avoided for new beginnings. A good muhurat works around these, choosing a time that is clear and supportive.

Frequently asked

Can a puja be done without a muhurat?

Many daily and devotional pujas can be done any time with sankalp. For major life events — weddings, griha pravesh, business openings — a proper muhurat is strongly advised.

How far in advance should I request a muhurat?

As early as possible, especially for weddings and festivals when auspicious dates are in high demand. Share your details a few weeks ahead where you can.
